Daryl Hannah’s portrait of Neil Young in concert is getting a big screen release April 17 and if you can go see it on the big screen. Shot in a way that gives us a sense of place- the images tend to be big and wide- the film feels like it would be at home on an IMAX screen where the idea is to make it feel like you are there. We are there with Young as he is riding down the Pacific coast and performing on stage in a wonderful looking theater.
Shot in a moody black and white the film has a dream like feel that creates a magic spell. It’s a spell that carries us through the film until the end credits when the film pops into color.
The film a mix of Young on stage solo and him talking behind in the scenes and in the bus. It’s a very much a you are there experience. How you react to the film is going to be determined by how big a fan you are of Neil Young. I say that because the film is very much Young being Young and not playing to the camera. Additionally Young is playing songs from his long career so don’t come looking for the hits.
If you are a Neil Young this film is a must. If you want a one of a kind cinematic concert experience please go.
