This is the story of Mildred “Millie” Burke, who used professional wrestling as a means of getting out of her small town.
Based on the book The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend by Jeff Leen, the film is a slice of life in 1930's America. Burke, has a job, but wants more. She likes wrestling and knows she could be good at it. After pestering a promoter to let her try, he fully expects her to get destroyed, she proves herself (in a different way than history says it happened) and ends up starting her career. The thing is that she can't just jump in the ring wonens wresting is illegal in many states.
A mix of old school drama and modern sports story telling QUEEN OF THE RING is a one of a kind film. Focusing not only on Burke's time in the ring but outside it this film has a great deal going on. While that makes for a better film over all, there are times watching the film for the first time where it's unique rhythms seems slightly off. What exactly is this film looking to do? Which story is this telling. Eventually it all comes together but for a while it isn't always certain.
Don't get me wrong, I liked QUEEN OF THE RING, more so the second time through, it's just that can seem a bit slow at times. .
Recommended, especially if you are a pro wretling fan and are interested in the sports history
