Nightcap 3/2/25 - SXSW, The Oscars, Rendezvous With French Cinema, MUBI

As this posts I'll be in transit from this years New York International CHildren's FIlm Festival. I'll have been there for three day so look for reports during the week.

---

There will be some SXSW coverage. Not a lot. But some.

As many of you know I will not cover the festival as accreditted press in part because it's a pain in the ass to do so remotely (they want you make the trip), mostly its because a couple years back the press office told several writers that they were going to go along with a certain PR person and have their credentials pulled for writing negative reviews of the films he was handling if he asked.  Having seen the email exchanges from several people I decided to step away from officially having anything to do with the festival.

Anyway while there is no official coverage, I will have pieces on films sent to me for coverage.

The Oscars are tonight and while I've seen almost every film I really don't care that much (though I do want Ed Lachman to win for best cinematography.)

The reason I don't care is that the choices are the best, just the one's that had the best PR firms. I mean films like THE LAST SHOWGIRL which should have been in the acting mix are not represented. Nor was THELMA or a dozen other films, many of which genuinely the BEST films of the year with the BEST performances.

If doing Unseen Films has taught me anything it is that the Oscars may sell itself as the greatest film awards but in reality they are a hollow one because the films they are selling are rarely the  best.

There will be a good amount of coverage of the annual Rendezvous With French Cinema at Lincoln Center, though not as much as I would have liked. Time and tide (and the weather) prevented it.

That said, what I've seen is choice so if there is something that interests you go see it.

I have not been covering what’s released to Mubi and Ovid and some of the other services because I don’t have time. However I got the list of Mubi films for March and there are a bunch I wanted to put on your radar:

EL PLANETA is a super film about a mother and a daughter

100 YARDS is a killer martial arts film where women are key to the plot and it ends with a 45 plus minute battle

DAAAAALI! Is a crazy film about a reporter trying to interview Salvatore Dali. It’s the most Dali like film about Dali.

The Assassin, directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien is not for everyone but it looks great.

BYZANTIUM is a grossly under appreciated Neil Jordan films about vampires

The Oscar nominate THE SUBSTANCE

SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD is a great documentary about women at a sauna
