Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars in what maybe Mike Leigh’s final film as a woman with anxiety and social issues. It’s an amazing performance and the reason to see the film.
The film is a largely plotless tale following Jean-Baptiste’s character as she go through her days dealing with the people in her life, including her sister and son. It is a small scale slice of life where we just watch people being people.
While I like the film, I think it’s a minor film. For me there isn’t much here, which is all well and good but the film is coming from one of the great filmmakers working today and made waves and many of the big festivals this year so I was expecting something meatier. This isn’t a knock on the film, more it’s slight disappointment, I was expecting a full on portrait not what amounts to a very beautiful doodle.
My kvetching aside this is a Mike Leigh film and so is worth a look just for that.
