DOC NYC Shorts: Qotzuñi: People of the lake, TURNAROUND, MOTORCYCLE MARY

Qotzuñi: People of the lake
Brief portrait of the people who live around what was once Lake Poopo in Bolivia. The lake is gone now, thanks to all of the water being diverted for mining. It didn’t help that prolonged drought and climate changed help dry up what water there was. Now there is nothing but a salt bed where almost nothing besides crazy people live.

This is a moving tale about the cost of human greed and stupidity. Recommended.

TURNAROUND
A look at  a Phillies fan who hopes to turn around other fans in the wake of the team signing Trea Turner a big named star who could help them win a World Series.

This is a solid look at what it’s like to be a fan for a team that isn’t always successful. It’s a warts and all look at one fan who comes across as a very human character.

Recommended

MOTOR CYCLE MARY (30 for 30)
Portrait of racer Mary McGee who just sort of fell into racing because he brother brought her along. The first  woman to race motorcycles, do motorcycles and the first person to race the Baja 1000 solo,  was was way ahead of the curve.

Glorious film needs to be a feature film or a TV series or something because McGee is such a great subject. She’s done it all an lived to tell about and kept her good humor while doing it.

One of the best films at DOC NYC and 2024
