Rent Free (2024) Tribeca 2024

Ben and Jordan decide to spend a year living off the kindness of friends and relatives in order to live rent free.

This is the very definition of a Tribeca film. It's an inde relationship comedy about being young and urban where the main characters are not really connected to reality, but a unique universe where self absorbed people in their late 20's try to make sense of the world.  These films aren't bad, but they aren't great either, owing to their artificial nature.

The real problem with films like RENT FREE is very often we don't like the main characters. Here the problem Ben who is overly needy and unhappy that his pal Jordan has a girlfriend. Points to Jacob Roberts for giving us a well rounded character, but minus a few because he isn't someone we really want  to spend time with.  I disconnected.

Forgive me, but this film didn't work for me. I never felt as though I was being invited in into the world of Ben and Jordan.  Yes I was being shown their world but I wasn't being asked to go into it. I should have wanted to lean in and see more, instead I wanted to get up and leave because I just didn't care.

As I said above RENT FREE isn't bad, it just isn't involving enough that it will live rent free in your brain. Odds are it will be evicted and never thought of again.
