One of the best films at this year's Tribeca FIlm Festival is a look at the "rebel" country artists who are lighting up the country charts. These are the trail blazers who are taking new roads much like the rebels before them, instead of it being Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, breaking the mold, this time it's Jelly Roll, Lil Naz X, Lainey Wilson, Breland, Blanco Brown, and Sam Williams, among others, who are rewriting the rules and infusing the music with new life.
This is a magnificent look at the changing face of Country. Showing us not only the new faces, but explaining why the new faces are actually the old faces just brought out into the open. What I mean by that is the fact that black musicians were way more influential then any one thinks (many old country songs were recorded as blues songs by black artists), that Latin music was there all the time and that gay and lesbian artists were all over the place, they just never said anything publicly. Even if you think you know the history of country music this film is going to tell you something new. (there is so much here that I can't believe its only 78 minutes long). Actually what the film makes abundantly clear is that the so called rebels now and then simply rebelled simply by refusing to be anything except what they were and insisted on speaking about the things that meant something to them.
I simply can't tell you how good this film is. In a year where too many film can't end soon enough, REBEL COUNTRY makes me wish it was many times longer.
Just see this film- trust me- it will have you downloading all sorts of new music as soon as the film ends.
