FEDERER 12 FINAL DAYS (2024) Tribeca 2024

This is a chronicle of the 12 days leading up to the final match of Roger Federer. We follow from his recording his announcement, to its release to his final match. It’s Federer and his friends looking back.

I’m going to be honest and say there is no way I saw this film in a vacuum. I saw this film after 50+ films from Tribeca where many are biographies of famous people.  I say that because if I was coming at this film isolated and not in a festival situation my feelings may have been different.

As a film as part of the festival with lots of biographical documentaries FEDERER suffers. It’s a safe film that is measured and controlled. It’s a film that is very much an arm’s length puff piece made for his fans.  Everything feels stage managed. We are always outside looking in. We are never there with Federer, but only being given access like a VIP meet and greet that came without tickets.

While not a bad film it is incredibly dull. Again this is because I saw films earlier in the festival where the subjects literally got naked  in camera or allowed the crew to film them when they looked like shit. Seeing Federer is lots of white rooms or shot from a distance never connected us.

I suspect seeing it on it’s own it would have been less artificial.

Worth a look for fans all others need not buy a ticket
