Portrait of singer and comic artist Jeffrey Lewis in his own words. The film is a warts and all look at the man, his music and his art where he opens up about everything in his life including the dark places that his mind takes him to.
I had no idea who Jeffrey Lewis was before I saw this film and because the film did what every film like this should do it made me want to know more. While not a fan and while I haven’t chased down his music I am interested enough to want to go see him live. I do however want to chase down his art.
What I like about the film is that we get a real sense of Lewis. There aren’t a lot of talking heads speaking platitudes but simply -Lewis and his friends just talking. There doesn’t seem to be any embellishment just a conversation between friends. That may not sound like much but in todays world that is a big deal since biographical docs seem to want to sell the subject instead of show us the person as they really are.
I really liked this film a great deal. Definitely this is one of the films you’ll want to catch at Slamdance.
