Fox and Diane live in a world where it is illegal to have a job. They meet on a job making shoes and become friends and perhaps more.
Several days on since I first saw LOVE AND WORK, I was still trying to deduce what my feelings for it were. A very mannered comedy, there is a deliberate nature to how it's shot and it's set in an off kilter world, it's a film that seems at times very hard to be trying to stand out. Yes, it is frequently funny and often endearing, but there are bumps.
A large part of the problem for me is the world the film is set in doesn't make any sense, even on its own terms. Its a dystopian world where you can't work, but that raises all sorts of questions I shouldn't be asking. Perhaps if this was a short or if it wasn't set in real places it might have played better. It's something that disconnected me at the start and worked against my fully enjoying the film.
On the other hand Stephanie Hunt and Will Madden make a perfect couple and their pairing make the whole film worth seeing. Honestly I would love to see them paired again in something a bit more tightly knitted together. There is something special about the way they play off each other that is like Hepburn and Tracy or Powell and Loy. You want to see the chemistry over and over again. Ultimately this is worth a look for the two stars.
