He Went That Way (2023)in theaters today and On Demand January 12

Kind of sort of based on a true story Zachary Quinto and Jacob Elordi star as the owner of a chimpanzee who is a big TV star who picks up a clean cut young man who happens to be a serial killer.  Traveling toward Chicago the pair kind of become friends.

Incredibly messy retelling of a footnote story will have you guessing how much of it is real and how much is made up. Most of it feels like a TV movie of the week and by the time we finish watching the footage that ends the film we realize this is largely all make believe.

A huge part of the problem is they never get the tone right. Sure Elordi's Jimmy is a bad guy, but you know he isn't going to kill Quinto's character so there is no suspense. Yea, we see him kill in flashbacks, but that's not the focus of the movie so it never makes us afraid. Worse the notion of a sexual tension between the pair is bobbled so that if it is supposed to be there it's never felt.

While never truly bad, it's never really compelling and if I wasn't in a theater with friends I would have walked out simply because I just didn't care.

You won't either.
