BABY (2024) Slamdance 2024

A young woman with Downs Syndrome decides that she wants to be a mother and throws the lives of those around her, especially her sister, into chaos.

This film needs to be expanded into a feature. There is simply too much for this 20 minute film to contain and I kept wanting to see more.  I needed to know where plot threads would lead to after the film ends.

This is a wonderful film. This slice of life is just a wonderful tale of the sort we don't see anywhere. Far from preachy or the sort of Hollywood feel good movie of the week, BABY instead drops us into the rough and tumble lives of some people and lets us watch for a while. Sure the main character has Downs Syndrome and that plays a large part in the story, but at the same time director/producer James Di Martino, and writer/producer Llewellyn Michael Bates always keep the characters, the people, front and center. This is about them and not the disorder.

In an age where everyone wants to make films where the casts and situations are inclusive BABY is a film that shows the way as to how to do it.

While I could have done without some of the over the top humor at the start, I truly loved this film great deal. I want to see more...and I want to see how this plays out after the credits rolled.

That's a rave.

Highly recommended.
