Two Capsule DOC NYC 2023 reviews DALTONS DREAMS and THE DMITRIEV AFFAIR

DALTONS DREAM
Portrait of X-Factor winner Dalton Harris. A thought that winning the show would make him a superstar, however living as a closeted gay man caused havoc in his life and it was a long road to finding and accepting himself.

Good, if somewhat by the numbers, story that shows how living in an world that isn't accepting, Jamaica has anti-gay laws, can destroy a person if they can't find a place to be themselves.

THE DMITRIEV AFFAIR
A look at the case of Yuri Dmitriev, a man who spent his time trying to locate the mass graves created by secret Soviet mass executions during the Stalin years. The problem is that current Russian authorities wanted the dead to remain buried and he was set up to have him off the case.

I'm torn in regard to this film. While I was very intrigued by the notion that Russian authorities were trying to stop someone looking in to the crimes of Stalin, the slow and leisurely telling works against it. This film takes forever to get where it's going since it feel stretched with lots of sequences of walks and discussions of things not on point. I liked it but I really wanted it to move faster since the slowness feel like stretching and not like it's building mood.
