I really liked MAKING OF. That may not be the best way to start a review but it's the truth. It's a film about the making of a film that had me hunkered down and eating popcorn and smiling for two hours.
The film follows the slowly imploding shoot of a film. Things are not going as planned, the backers have decided that they want an older version of the script to be used, the crew is revolting, the lead actor is a jerk, the guy shooting the documentary on the making of the film isn't any good and the director's life is imploding. Basically your typical film shoot.
I don't mean to disrespect any of the filmmakers but I was having too good a time watching this film to take notes. Frankly this was the first film in a long time where I just watched it with no thought of having to review it or whether there was anything wrong, I simply took it it at face value and just watched it. What a joy to get lost in a film.
If this best film you'll see all year? Probably not, but it will be one of the most entertaining. I think it will be even more enjoyable if you love the movies and can relate to all the things that happen in it.
For me this is one of the great discoveries of this year's Venice film festival. I can't wait to see it again and share it with my friends.
