Last year word out of Sundance as that PALM TREE AND POWER LINES was going to mess us up. It was a dark tale that sensitive viewers should avoid. It was with trepidation that I finally sat down to watch it.
Sigh...while not a bad film, it's just that the film doesn't have the gut punch promised.
The plot of the film concerns a bookish 17 year old girl who takes up with a 34 year old man who says all the right things. He sweet and charming and is interested in her. She is smitten but this isn't going to end well.
This is a really well made film. Its beautifully shot and movingly acted. On it's own terms its a good film about a good girl going to the dark side. I like the the film... I just didn't feel the gut punch.
The problem here is the script. While the film does create some great characters, but it doesn't do anything surprising. If you have been even half way around the block you can guess where this is going early on. This mitigates the surprise. As a result this isn't a shocking as it thinks it is. And while not all bad , the film does get bonus points for not going Hollywood and giving us a truly sad ending.
Disappointment at the lack of shock aside the film is still worth seeing .
