Okay full disclosure for anyone who isn’t a long time reader of Unseen Films , I am not a fan of found footage films. I have issues that keep me distant from the films. Don’t get me wrong, when they work they are absolutely great but more often then not they don’t work for me.
With that out of the way I have to say I was not going to see THE OUTWATERS. I was buried with several film festivals and I didn’t have time…and the my friend Liz Whittemore started to text me to ask me “WTF” and “oh dear god no” and a few other things. So I had to see what she was talking about.
The film is the story found on some flash cards in the Mojave desert. After a frantic 911 call over the opening titles the first half of the film is by way of an introduction to the various characters. It’s innocuous and lulls us into a false sense of security. Things are not bad. There is no real signs of anything, what could happen. By the time that darkness falls in the desert we’re certain this is going to be a cake walk.
The poop hits the fan and all bets are off. Something is in the blackness and while there maybe a flashlight or two there is never enough light to see what it is. While we see the blood and the fear and gore. And lest you think that one need to wait until daylight, forget it because what we see in the light is probably worse.
THE OUTWATERS is a hellish nightmare of a film. It’s a film that is so visceral in it’s horror it over rides the logic centers of the brain when they insist “it can’t be real because no one would be filming when THAT happens”. Yea someone may not be logically filming that---but what in the holy hell is THAT? Anyway?
I have no clue.
Frankly I don’t know if I want to know. I just want to inflict this film on my horror loving friends and family
If you want to see a great film, found footage or not – see THE OUTWATERS
