Filmmaker Ross Munro remembers being 9 years old and going to the movies in the early 1970’s.
Fact mixes with fiction in a shaggy dog story that is fictional in the details of the film and the starlet that is the object of his boyhood obsession, but dead on in the details of what it was like going to the movies way back when. Being roughly the same age, I can attest that to the joys and complications of going to the movies alone when you are 9 years old. While I didn’t have to take a bus, I did have to figure out how best to spend the cash and bring a little bit home.
This is a sweet little film. It’s a trip back to an age before cellphones, constant contact and blind fear that little kids need to be watched every minute lest they be carried away by a stranger. It was also a time when you could stay for a second viewing of film.
Definitely worth a look.
