On Friday night the Lower East Side Film Festival did a double feature and I caught the the first film, CRABS!" on screener sent to me by the festival and all I can say is I wish I had been at the screening. This is a film that will be an absolute blast with an audience of crazy film fans.
A loving send up of every type of monster film and a few other genres this is a tongue through cheek comedy that is just the right mix of comedy and monsters. Yes the film knows its silly and it leans into it, while at the same time playing it reasonably straight, or at least not in the jabbing you in the ribs making sure you know it's funny sort of the way. Its over the top but the actors play it straight which makes it all the more funny.
The plot of the film has a quiet seaside town attacked by mutant horseshoe crabs on the day of the prom. They are growing bigger and bigger by the minute until we end up with a battle between giant crabs and a giant robot crab.
Yes it is exactly what you expect, and we are so much better for it. Writer/Director Pierce Berolzheimer pulls out all the stops and practical effects to make a film that might have looked better with CGI but would not have been as much fun.
I had an absolute blast watching it.
And no I'm not going to say a word about the film because you already know the details- I'll just say that you should bring your ninja sword.
Recommended.
