Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman's NEPTUNE FROST is a film that is based on a comic book they were in the process of putting together. (it will be published soon) . Along the way they decided to turn the comic into a Broadway show. However during conversations with their producers it was decided to make it a film instead. The result is a one of a kind Afro-Futurist Scifi Musical that will delight people who love unique visions of the world.
I’m not going to lie and tell you I understand the plot. It essentially is the story of a group of people fleeing and fighting the Authority who want to keep them repressed. They attempt to escape into other worlds and other dimensions. It’s a political look at the life we live with a beat that will frequently get your body moving.
The film is a no tech low budget film that asks you from the first frame to go with it. Using the style of Norman Jewison’s film version of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR which begins with the cast arriving on a bus to perform the play the film begins in a mine and we simply follow the characters from there. If you can’t accept the film from the start then odds are you are not going to like what follows. This is a film that asks the audience to be a co-conspirator and rewards though that will conspire.
Walking out of the film I was listening to the people coming out talking about going to get more tickets for the next nights screening so that they could take friends and share the wonder of what they had seen. The reality is that any film that makes the members of the audience want to see the film again and bring friends doesn’t need my words or the words of any writer anywhere. It will find its own audience and take over the world.
Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman's NEPTUNE FROST is a unique cinematic experience and demands to be seen.
Highly recommended- particularly for anyone who wants to see something they have never seen before.
