Following the cancellation of the Miami Film Festival last week, feature documentary film Los Últimos Frikis, which was scheduled to screen at Miami’s Tower Theater on Friday, March 13, will have its festival screening online instead, starting today Wednesday, March 18.
Directed by Nicholas Brennan, Los Últimos Frikis is an intimate documentary portrait of Zeus, a hard-rocking, state-sponsored heavy metal band from Havana, Cuba. Practically unknown outside of Cuba, Zeus has earned a legendary following of “frikis” on the island. Filmed over the course of a decade by an American and Cuban team of filmmakers, Los Últimos Frikis offers a unique view of modern Cuba through the eyes of these head-banging heroes.
“Zeus has fought in Cuba for over thirty years for their music to be heard, so we want to make sure their voice isn’t silenced,” director Nicholas Brennan said. “Zeus is an inspiring example of how we can all persevere during uncertain, challenging times. While traditional outlets for creative work are suspended and cancelled, we can work together to find new ways for sharing stories and supporting each other.”
The digital screening will be available to limited audiences in the United States for one week starting Wednesday, March 18 through Vimeo On Demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/losultimosfrikis, with a streaming fee of $4.99—corresponding to half the ticket price available at the Miami Film Festival.

The digital festival screening is co-presented by Cinema Tropical, a non-profit media arts organization that has become a leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States.

About the Director:
Nicholas Brennan is a documentary filmmaker based in New York. He is currently a staff director at CNN’s Courageous Studios, where he is part of the founding team at the award-winning branded content studio. He has previously worked for ABC News, The New York Times, VICE and for global brands including AT&T, Intel, Toyota, and American Express. Los Últimos Frikis is his feature debut. He has previously directed the short documentaries Mama and Hard Rock Havana as well as the short narrative A Marine’s Guide to Fishing. He is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he was a Willard TC Johnson Fellow in the Film & TV program. |
