THE FOURTH KINGDOM: THE KINGDOM OF PLASTICS (EL CUARTO REINO: EL REINO DE LOS PLÁSTICOS) plays November 9 and 13
This is an observational look at the Sure We Can a nonprofit recycling center and community space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We watch as the men and women go through their daily routines and process the refuse that we all create in our everyday lives, feed cats and discuss heady subjects. If you are a fan of observational documentaries this film is for you as we look at the lives of the people at the space. Yes we get to see the work they do but more importantly we get unexpected insight into them as human beings to the point of shattering what is going to be most people’s at DOC NYC’s expectations as discussions spiral out into wonderfully unexpected places such as discussion of science vs religion relating to the creation of the universe (Could the Big Bang have been god creating the world?) I’m not going to guess if you like observational slices of life, but if you do then this film is for you.
SHEEP HERO plays November 7
The life of a traditional sheep herder and his family are numbered as modern life encroaches on the way they do things. Good slice of life about the end days of way of life is best when we are simply watching the life in the fields or when the Sheep are wandering through the local village. In those sequence the sound and images transcend the ordinary to become something magnificently glorious. It is in those moment we understand why Stijn doe what he does. The rest of it is solid, but nowhere near as transcendent. For the glorious visual sequences this film must be seen on the big screen.
TALKING ABOUT ADULTERY plays November 8
Mixed bag documentary about adultery consists of interviews with all the people involved in various infidelities talking about the whys and hows. The images are often unconnected to what we hear in the audio interviews. To be honest I’m throwing my hands up on this one, you’re on your own. If you want to listen to people talk about their infidelities while looking at pretty pictures give it ago. If not, you’ll probably be like me and be done with the film about 10 minutes in.
