The plot of the film has a loner who wants no part of anyone. So much so he has moved as far away from civilization as possible. He gets a call that he has to take custody of his son. He wants no part of the boy having dumped him years before. However the die is cast and he goes to get the boy.
If you think you know where this is going you're probably only partly right. Writer/director Jaron Albertin and co-writer Edna Walsh have fashioned a script that doesn't play out like other trips to the well. Characters are not clear cut, there is a lot of grays, and things don't follow the formula. We can't be sure how this will all go.
The film ishelped a long by a great cast (Alessandro Nivola, Julianne Nicholson, Johnny Knoxville and Eli Haley) which disappear into their roles. Johnny Knoxville is so out of character I had to go back into the film to see if he was who I thought he was. All kidding about his Jackass days aside, Knoxville is a great actor when allowed to act.
While not perfect, it can be a bit arty and rough around the edges, it is decidedly good enough that you won't care. More importantly it's good enough I can say go out and see it.
