Fantasia Capsule Reviews CATCH ME DADDY and KUNG FU KILLER

CATCH ME DADDY

Runaway Indian girl is in love with an English lad so they go off together. When her family finds out where she is her father sends off gangs of thugs to bring her back - the elopement has brought dishonor on the family.

Gritty violent riff on Romeo and Juliet has much to recommend it even if the film didn't quite win me over. Its in no way a bad film, it just didn't click with me (blame it on a late night viewing- I'm looking at another go round when it hits US theaters), Reservations or no most of the film is  expertly executed  to such a degree that the final moments of the film kicked me right in the gut and left me staring broken at the screen.

The film screens again on July 28th.

KUNG FU KILLER

Someone is killing all of the martial arts masters in Hong Kong, no one has really noticed it but Donnie Yen, safe behind bars sees the connections between the random deaths and talks his way out of prison. Soon Yen realizes he's also on the killers list.

Great Donnie Yen choreographed action carries the day in a great little popcorn film that's a great deal of fun. Yen is one hell of a choreographer and his action scenes really pop with not a bad one among the bunch. I really liked this film a great deal and while not perfect it's a hell of a lot more entertaining than a couple of recent Yen stinkers (Its the first one in a long time that I'd not only watch again but buy to have in my collection). Wang Baoqiang, normally cast in comedic roles, is the bad guy and the playing against type adds a great deal to the tension since we don't know what he;s going to do.

This is a must see for anyone who wants to see a great little action film to escape the days worries.

(And I don't know why the dedication of the film at the end moved me.)

This plays one more time at Fantasia on July 25th. Go see it big.
